Key learnings

Design Adjustments: ASHPs were integrated into existing house type designs, many designed to suit gas combi boilers and were without dedicated space for an internal hot water cylinder. Internal layouts were therefore redesigned and rear elevations were altered to accommodate the ASHP. To adapt to the lower operational flow temperatures of 45°C, radiators were upsized and repositioned where necessary.

Installation & Commissioning: it was important to ensure contractors were trained in the installation and commissioning of the specific brand and model of ASHP. Assisted commissioning support provided from the manufacturer to the contractor was invaluable in optimising settings and ensuring they matched design specifications. Additionally, it was important to check that flow and return pipework was appropriately insulated and routed as per design to prevent unnecessary heat losses.

Training of Sales teams: on-site training delivered by the ASHP manufacturer ensured our sales teams understood the basics of ASHPs, so they were confidently able to address customer concerns and answer typical questions.

Customer Education: during handover of the properties, the Site Manager conducted practical demonstrations for residents on the their new heating system and provided homeowner ASHP guides. The ASHP manufacturer also held regular on-site demonstrations to residents, either in their own homes or in group sessions in the on-site show home, which were well received.

Monitoring: Five ASHPs were equipped with monitoring equipment to provide in-depth technical data on performance. This data was complemented by regular resident questionnaires to understand their experience with ASHPs. Key findings to date include commissioning of the ASHPs is critical for optimum performance and checking settings match design specifications. Furthermore resident education is essential for efficient system operation, leading to lower energy bills.
